San Marcos Fire Department Services

Our friends at the San Marcos Fire Department (SMFD) reached out recently to share a few clarifications about a service they provide — and we wanted to help communicate their message with you!

Many residents have contacted SMFD for help with changing smoke alarm batteries or replacing smoke alarms. The department is always happy to assist when someone is unable to safely reach or change a battery — particularly those with mobility limitations.

However, please note that any maintenance involving hardwired smoke alarms or electrical components must be handled by a licensed electrician. SMFD does not perform electrical work, but they remain available to help when a battery change is truly needed and other options aren’t available.

When SMFD provides and installs smoke alarms for residents in need, that program is made possible entirely through community donations, not tax dollars. These contributions help ensure that assistance remains available for households across San Marcos who rely on this life-saving service.

If you’d like to support their outreach efforts, please consider a donation to the San Marcos Fire Department Community Outreach Fund. Every contribution helps them continue providing resources and support to those who need it most. To contribute, please drop off a check at the front desk. Please make the check payable to “City of San Marcos” and note in the memo line, “SMFD Fire Alarm Program Donation”. Checks will be delivered monthly to the City of San Marcos by KTMC.

Thank you for helping preserve this wonderful community resource and for showing ongoing appreciation for our local first responders. Together, we can help keep San Marcos safe and supported.
